The present volume includes a lengthy article devoted to housing in Islamic countries. It begins with a study of the term “house” and its equivalents in the Persian, Arabic, and Turkic languages and evaluates the information that Islamic sources provide on the concept of this term and then enters into a discussion on various kinds of houses in different countries of the Islamic world. Efforts have been made to identify common environmental features and cultural relations between various Islamic countries in the following sub-categorisation of geographical characteristics.
The present volume includes the English translations of selected articles devoted to this subject which were originally published in Persian in the Encyclopaedia of the World of Islam (EWI). Other entries from this encyclopaedia which are available in English include History and Historiography, Historical Sources of the Islamic World, Qur’anic Exegesis, Tafsir and Hawza-yi ‘Ilmiyya.
