If we truly understand that we belong to God, then I think this is a higher stage than that of trying to please God. This is because when you are trying to please God you still might consider yourself as being somewhat independent of God. But on the other hand, you may try to please Him and then reach a point where you tend to forget yourself and just think that you belong to God; you become an agent of God.
If you are an agent of God and if you manage to get rid of your “self”, which is like a shell, then it is easily possible to get united with others. As long as I think of myself as a person, then I will see myself different from you. But if I forget my personhood – if I forget my own independent identity – and try to get united in God and disappear in God, then there I would have no problem being united with you.
Thus, someone who is selfless can easily get united with other selves. Others may have a problem because they still have a “self”, but the one who is selfless has no problem uniting with others. If we look at it from a philosophical perspective, each of us is like a container. A container does not have anything except that which comes from God. Accordingly, if you have, say, water in a container, the water comes from God. What comes from me is the shape and size that brings limitation. I do not have water of myself, I am just limiting it. But I limited this size, you limited that size, I limited like a circle, you limited like a triangle – we are only limiting the grace of God in ourselves. However, if we manage to get rid of our “self”, then we will be connected to the ocean and we can easily get united with other people, if they accept it. At this stage you can easily unite with others and understand them. Maybe they do not want to be with you, but that is not your problem. If a person really achieves this condition, then I think that not only would he always be remembering God, but he would also be able to remind people of God. It is then that this person becomes a godly person.
